Just askin' - Fresno State vs. Boise State
There is a lot to discuss after the Bulldogs' 41-40 victory over the Broncos on Friday. Some of it good, some of it bad.
People probably have a few more questions than answers after Friday. We want to have some fun with that, but the questions are very real.
This is a segment we like to call "Just askin', just sayin."
Just Sayin' -- After saying that they needed to look at the film and figure out what was wrong with the running game, the Bulldogs only netted 62 yards rushing on 24 attempts against the Broncos. We said that Boise running back Jay Ajayi came in with more yards than the entire Bulldog team. Well, Ajayi gained 54 yards in the game and Fresno State had 62.
Just Askin' -- What exactly did coaching staff see when they looked at that video? If your receiver and your quarterback are the second and third leading rushers from the game, was enough time spent working on it?
Just Sayin' -- Fresno State is now ranked in both polls. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 25 in the AP Top 25 and ranked No. 23 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll.
Just Askin' -- If the Bulldogs can't manufacture a running game, how realistic is a BCS berth? With rankings come a microscope, and the Bulldog running game is about to be put under one if they climb through the rankings, as they expect to do. At this point in the season, Wyoming is the best game Fresno State has remaining on their regular-season schedule.
Just Sayin' -- The Bulldogs have officially launched a Heisman campaign for quarterback Derek Carr. The school launched DC4Heisman.com to promote the senior gun-slinger. Carr is third in the nation with 373.3 yards per game. He also has 12 touchdowns to only 1 interception. He's thrown for a touchdown in 23-straight games.
Just Askin' -- What kind of gifts will Fresno State send out to promote Carr? We've heard of everything from dumbbells to Northern Illinois' lunchbox/notepad combination from last year. A website is nice, but Fresno State is really going to have to push Carr into the spotlight with personal interest pieces and interviews. How will they put Carr out there? What do they have planned besides a website?
Just Sayin' -- The Mountain West conference is bad this year. Through week 4, the Mountain division has a combined 13 losses, the West division has 12. Fresno State and Wyoming are the only schools with 3 wins at this point. Fresno State is the only school without a loss.
Just Askin' -- How is this going to play into the voter's minds? Northern Illinois is currently undefeated. They have a very favorable schedule after this weekend's game with Purdue. If the Bulldogs and the Huskies run the table, who will get the BCS berth?
Just Sayin' -- A Biletnikoff Award campaign for Isaiah Burse would be a nice compliment to the attention being given to Davante Adams. Burse currently leads all Bulldog receivers with 309 yards and an average of 11.4 yards per catch.
Just Askin' -- Why hasn't Fresno State worked in more plays for their tight ends? Marcel Jensen and Greg Watson have a combined 14 catches. For an offense that has had trouble getting the running game going, why haven't they taken advantage of some tight end mismatches in short-yardage situations?
Just Sayin' -- Bulldog kicker Colin McGuire is having a hell of a season so far. McGuire is 17-of-17 when it comes to making extra points, and he is 5-of-6 when asked to kick field goals. That includes his 47-yarder to keep Fresno State alive against Rutgers. Oh, we almost forgot to add that his extra point against Boise proved to be the game-winner.
Just Askin' -- Did anyone think a true freshman could come in and do such a great job? These are college kickers we're talking about here. How has McGuire not gotten a little dap for the job he's done so far? Does anyone want to acknowledge that a true freshman has perfectly nailed his two most important kicks of the season?
Just Sayin' -- Carr's emotions after the Boise game on Friday proved that it wasn't just another game to him. This is a game he'd wanted for a very long time and it was a game the Bulldogs had to have if they wanted anyone to take their BCS hopes seriously, regardless of what anybody said.
Just Askin' -- After coming from behind against Rutgers and grinding out a battle with Boise State, are you a believer that this team can find a way to win, no matter what? Did their mentality against Boise State encourage you as much as it appeared to encourage these players?
Just Sayin' -- The Fresno State defense is having a really down year. The Bulldogs are currently ranked 116th in total defense. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, Idaho and Air Force are ranked just below them. This gives them some breathing room for worst defense in the conference, but it's not by much. Air Force is 117th in the country and Idaho is 118th.
Just Askin' -- Remember a couple minutes ago when we asked about Northern Illinois? Is their 115th ranked defense going to be enough to get them through the season undefeated? If so, can Fresno State pull off the same feat?
Just Sayin' -- The Bulldogs can add the nation's 109th worst running attack to their 116th ranked defense.
Just Askin' -- Can anyone run the football in the Mountain West? San Jose State is 115th. Hawaii is 114th. San Diego State is 113th in the country. Even Nevada is close to the 70's. Does the Mountain West have something against running the football?
Just Sayin' -- Northern Illinois has the nation's 11th most potent rushing attack.
Just Askin' -- Will Fresno State have a 100-yard rusher in a game? Does the running game concern you? If not, what does?
