Fresno State picks up JC offensive lineman
Fresno State picked up a key commitment from three-star Norwalk (Calif.) Cerritos C.C. offensive lineman Sean Rubalcava. The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder will move from left tackle inside with a great chance to start for the Bulldogs in 2013.
After a great Fresno State official visit last weekend, Rubalcava made his college decision final on Wednesday afternoon.
"I had coach [Ron] Antoine and coach [Tim] DeRuyter come down to my school around four o'clock and I gave them my decision then," Rubalcava said. "Then coach [Cameron] Norcross and Antoine came to my house later.
"I was pretty happy so right before I went to bed I put it out there on Twitter. It kind of blew up, which is pretty good."
The original plan was for Rubalcava to visit Texas Tech this weekend, but the in-home from the Fresno State coaching staff changed all of that.
"The fact that they wanted to come to my school and my home to see my parents showed me that they were still on me and they made me feel really comfortable," he said. "I had a couple of days to think about it and of course I had to make a decision and go with it.
"The one thing that I kept going back to is when I was on my trip, and I really can't stress this enough, it felt like home. I knew if I went to visit [Texas] Tech I would enjoy it, but I didn't want to take the trip and lose Fresno. I made a move and I went with it and I am happy with what I decided to do."
There were a couple of points the Fresno State coaches made that stuck with Rubalcava.
"One thing they kept on telling me was that they are a family at Fresno," he said. "They also stressed the opportunity to play immediately. They are bringing most everyone back with a few positions that need to be filled and they told me I could be one of those missing pieces.
"Things are picking up there and that is what hit home for me."
There is a real shot Rubalcava can play right away, but if he does it will be at guard, not tackle.
"All of the film they have is of me playing left tackle and that is where I started since day one at Cerritos," Rubalcava explained. "I didn't get a lot of reps at guard in games, but I did get both left and right tackle reps and in practice I was getting guard reps.
"From what I know, it is easier to move a tackle inside than move a guard outside. The same things they expect their center and guards to do with the pulling and stuff, I did all of that as a tackle at Cerritos. The only thing I would be switching up is my stance, being in a two-point where at Cerritos I was in a three. It should be a good transition and I am pretty stoked to play guard."
Fresno State fans can expect to see Rubalcava working out with the team this summer, but he plans to make some appearances before that.
"I am signing on Wednesday and I do need to pass a couple of classes at Cerritos in my last semester. I will drive up for a couple of spring practices and probably the spring game. It will help me familiarize myself with all the terminology and the tempo and stuff.
"They invited me to come up whenever."
